2nd September 2010

At last night's open meeting three matters were for discussion. The first naturally centred around the condition of the bowling green and Anna Theodorou was present to give the  management's position. In a nutshell, despite its appearance, the green is playable and should be so for some time - as long as we continue switching the playing positions. Anna would not give any commitment as to when the carpet would be replaced but confirmed that whenever it became unplayable it would be replaced. She also confirmed that there were no plans whatsoever to close the facility.

The second point discussed is closely linked to the first - the membership of the club which has fallen significantly over the past year. A membership generation committee was appointed including Loukas as chairman and the open day on October 16th was discussed. Putting it simply, the sooner we can get more members the sooner the green will be re-laid.

Finally, a proposal that pay and play bowlers be allowed to enter club competitions was heatedly discussed. The proposal was defeated by a significant majority.

Ray Horrell was also given the opportunity to thank members for their support and help to him and Cath. He informed the members that Cath is still in the hospice but going downhill fairly quickly and he would be grateful if they wanted to visit.

Full minutes of the meeting will be available at the clubhouse.

30th August 2010

Don't forget the open meeting on Wednesday 1st September at 18.00 hrs

10th August 2010

Dates for your diaries and points of interest.

Presentation evening for Loukas's chain of office at the clubhouse on Wednesday 8th September. There will be quite a few visitors from other clubs. Meal available includes a curry and beef bourginon - nomes on the list on the notice board please.

The Club Annual Dinner Dance and presentation evening will be at the Moniatis Hotel on 20th November. Isobel has gone to great lengths to persuade them to increase the quality of the meal and a carvery will probably be offered. Some members have expressed disappointment that the same venue has been chosen but in terms of cost it is much cheaper than any other and for many members that is the deciding factor whether they can afford to attend. Tickets will be €20 for members and €25 for non members.

The Club AGM will be held at the clubhouse on Saturday 13th November. Proxy voting will be allowed but only for those who are off the island or too ill to attend. Registration for a proxy will be allowed up to 6th November.

Open meeting at the club on Wed 1st September at 6pm. Please read the notice on the club notice board.

Barrie will look at the possibility of organising a winter quiz league starting in September.

The visit to the club of the Israeli disabled bowlers in October is going ahead. Not sure of the date yet but anyone who can provide them with opposition is welcome.

Some Bits for your Interest

The Shirley and Ivan triples match scheduled for the 23rd September has been moved to 22nd November. This is because a lot of bowlers want to go to the SkySport tournament at Athena.

From 1st January 2011 all triples matches will be 15 ends. This is a World Bowls Crystalmark edict but it will not affect this year’s Shirley and ivan or the 2010 / 2011 Nationals in Cyprus

National Finals Day will be here at the Aphrodite Bowls Club on 5th and 6th May 2011.

Friday 16th July. Opening of the new oral Bay Club. All bowlers from all clubs welcome. Free beer and refreshments.

National Entries in to Ben Hebdige by 6th November please. The draw will take place on 9th November. Watch the Bowls Cyprus Website at www.bowlscyprus.net for all the fixtures and go to the rules page for the updated rules and regs.

Following on from today's open committee meeting .........................

It is with sadness that I have to announce that the Bowls Cyprus team selected for the Commonwealth games has been rejected. The reason given by the Commonwealth Games Committee is that none of the selected players were Cypriot Nationals or held Cypriot passports but were British ExPats. This is something which Bowls Cyprus should have checked at the very beginning and are at fault for not having done so - sorry George!!

However, it is with great pleasure that I can announce that Loukas Paraskeva has accepted our invitation to go forward and represent our club as President of Bowls Cyprus with immediate effect. Not sure when he will be presented with the chain of office so watch this space.

Aphrodite Bowls Club presentation evening / Dinner Dance was discussed at the open meeting today. No decision was made but the possibilities are the Aphrodite Club, the Moniatis Hotel and the Arsinoe Hotel. With any luck a final decision will be made soon but our prime intentions are to get the best value for money and to keep costs down.

Between 15th and 22nd October, a blind and disabled Israeli bowls team will be at the club practicing for the disabled championships to be held in South Africa ?? when. They are using our green because the championships will be on carpet whereas in Israel they bowls only on Grass. As many of our members as possible please to bowl against them. Rinks will be available for club use.

A reminder. If you enter a club competition, please make sure you check the dates of the competition and are available for it throughout its term. It is very unfair to enter and then drop out halfway. naturally, health and welfare reasons don't come into this!!!!

Again, dates for your diary. The Bowls Cyprus presentation evening will be at the Coral Bay Club in the middle of September - watch this space for the date. Our Club dinner dance will be either at the beginning of November (??6th) or end November (??27th). The Bowls Cyprus National Finals will be at our club on Thurs and Fri 5th and 6th May 2011.

Efro is looking into lighter weight summer shirts - watch the notice board for details

Bowls shed / changing rooms. Concern has been expressed recently that pay and play bowlers are taking and using equipment (score boards, mats, jacks etc) from the changing rooms. This means that we have no control over equipment which we have purchased out of club funds (we recently had to replace missing jacks at €35 each !!). Basically there are two sets of equipment - that which was originally purchased by the owner and the newer equipment purchased by ourselves. As from 1st June, the equipment intended for non member pay and play will be stored in a container outside the changing rooms. Our own club equipment will remain in the changing rooms which must be permanently locked; the keys to the ladies and gents changing rooms will be kept in a key safe alongside the door; the key safe will be accessed by a security number.

Please, please make sure that the changing room doors are kept locked at all times and that the key is returned to the key safe securely. Please do not share the security code with non members. To make things easier, the key code to start off with is a simple 1234 but this can be changed as often as thought necessary.

16 May 2010

It is with very great sadness that we announce the untimely death of Brian Robinson earlier this week. Details are a little sparse at the moment but it seems that Brian was out jogging and suddenly collapsed. The cause of death is not known but his cremation will be at Durham Crematorium next Wednesday. Our thoughts go out to Carole and as soon as any further information comes to hand it will be published here on the website.

Spoken to John Kerr in Harrowgate.  Brian died of heart attack when out jogging LAST  SUNDAY (9 May). Carol does not want ANY PHONE CALLS OR FLOWERS. Donations in lieu to Brtitish Heart foundation. Cremation on Wednesday at Durham. John and Linda will be attending. I have asked him to pass on the Club's deepest sympathies to the family and Carol.

The British High Commission in Nicosia have announced that the Passport Office will be closing from June 2010  after which renewals will be processed in MADRIDAnyone whose Passport is due to expire before June is advised to take appropriate action.

25th April

There have been a number of complaints recently about members receiving emails and text messages from Aphrodite Club advertising forthcoming events and functions. Many members suspected that their details had been gleaned from the members contact list which we hold at the clubhouse. After a recent chat with Anna it was confirmed that the details had been harvested from the original application forms and not from the confidential list. Anna has said that if any member does not wish to receive emails and text messages, please inform the desk at Aphrodite Club and names will be removed from the distribution list immediately.

19th February

Smoking. There have been a number of comments / complaints that people have been seen smoking behind the bike sheds - sorry, rinks !! This is just a reminder that smoking is only permitted on the clubhouse outside patio - and this is a directive from Anna and not from the committee!!

Many thanks to Sylvia and Alan who have donated a trophy which will be engraved with their name and dedicated to a particular club competition annually. We are still short of a couple of trophies so if you would like to present one, or know of a company / restaurant / business who would like to donate, please talk to Rob.

Well done to Fred and Newton and everyone involved (including our own disc jockey!!)  for a superb Valentine / Mr & Mrs evening. The reports that have come back are all complimentary. Do you want to create and organise a social evening ? If so please contact Isobel, the social secretary who will go out of her way to assist. Remember that all social events must go through the social secretary / committee to avoid unwanted clashes.

30th November 2009

RAFFLE PRIZES.  At the most recent committee meeting a suggestion was put forward that each club member donate 1 prize a year to be used in raffles.  You are probably aware that raffles are one of our major sources of income as a club and that the funds raised are used to enhance the benefits you receive as a club members (where else do you get dinner dance / presentation evenings for just €15 !!!). So please be generous when donating your raffle prize - the way to think about it is what would you like to win in a raffle ?? (Ferraris and Cruise Holidays excluded!!).

30th November 2009

WELFARE GROUP. Sylvia White is now the club welfare officer. In the new year she will be updating the list of available bits and pieces which could be useful to other members at certain times (crutches, wheelchairs, collapsible beds, child car seats etc etc). So if you have anything useful which you are prepared to loan in times of trouble or stress (and that includes visitors!) please let Sylvia Know. Similarly, if you hear of someone who needs support in any shape or form, let her know.      Click this button to see the latest.   Welfare Page
