2nd September 2010
At last night's open meeting three
matters were for discussion. The first naturally centred around the
condition of the bowling green and Anna Theodorou was present to
give the management's position. In a nutshell, despite its
appearance, the green is playable and should be so for some time -
as long as we continue switching the playing positions. Anna would
not give any commitment as to when the carpet would be replaced but
confirmed that whenever it became unplayable it would be replaced.
She also confirmed that there were no plans whatsoever to close the
facility.
The second point discussed is
closely linked to the first - the membership of the club which has
fallen significantly over the past year. A membership generation
committee was appointed including Loukas as chairman and the open
day on October 16th was discussed. Putting it simply, the sooner we
can get more members the sooner the green will be re-laid.
Finally, a proposal that pay and
play bowlers be allowed to enter club competitions was heatedly
discussed. The proposal was defeated by a significant majority.
Ray Horrell was also given the
opportunity to thank members for their support and help to him and
Cath. He informed the members that Cath is still in the hospice but
going downhill fairly quickly and he would be grateful if they
wanted to visit.
Full minutes of the meeting will
be available at the clubhouse.

Don't forget the open
meeting on Wednesday 1st September at 18.00 hrs
10th August 2010
Dates for your diaries and points of interest.
Presentation evening for
Loukas's chain of office at the clubhouse on Wednesday 8th
September. There will be quite a few visitors from other clubs. Meal
available includes a curry and beef bourginon - nomes on the list on
the notice board please.
The Club Annual Dinner Dance and
presentation evening will be at the Moniatis Hotel on 20th November.
Isobel has gone to great lengths to persuade them to increase the
quality of the meal and a carvery will probably be offered. Some
members have expressed disappointment that the same venue has been
chosen but in terms of cost it is much cheaper than any other and
for many members that is the deciding factor whether they can afford
to attend. Tickets will be 20 for members and 25 for non members.
The Club AGM will be held at the
clubhouse on Saturday 13th November. Proxy voting will be allowed
but only for those who are off the island or too ill to attend.
Registration for a proxy will be allowed up to 6th November.
Open meeting at the club on Wed 1st
September at 6pm. Please read the notice on the club notice board.
Barrie will look at the possibility of
organising a winter quiz league starting in September.
The visit to the club of the Israeli
disabled bowlers in October is going ahead. Not sure of the date yet
but anyone who can provide them with opposition is welcome.

Some Bits for your Interest
The Shirley and Ivan triples match
scheduled for the 23rd September has been moved to 22nd
November. This is because a lot of bowlers want to go to the
SkySport tournament at Athena.
From 1st January 2011 all
triples matches will be 15 ends. This is a World Bowls Crystalmark
edict but it will not affect this years Shirley and ivan or the
2010 / 2011 Nationals in Cyprus
National Finals Day will be here at
the Aphrodite Bowls Club on 5th and 6th May
2011.
Friday 16th July. Opening
of the new oral Bay Club. All bowlers from all clubs welcome. Free
beer and refreshments.

Following on from today's open committee meeting
.........................
It is with sadness that I have to announce
that the Bowls Cyprus team selected for the Commonwealth games has
been rejected. The reason given by the Commonwealth Games Committee
is that none of the selected players were Cypriot Nationals or held
Cypriot passports but were British ExPats. This is something which
Bowls Cyprus should have checked at the very beginning and are at
fault for not having done so - sorry George!!
However, it is with great pleasure that I
can announce that Loukas Paraskeva has accepted our invitation to go
forward and represent our club as President of Bowls Cyprus with
immediate effect. Not sure when he will be presented with the chain
of office so watch this space.
Aphrodite Bowls Club presentation evening /
Dinner Dance was discussed at the open meeting today. No decision
was made but the possibilities are the Aphrodite Club, the Moniatis
Hotel and the Arsinoe Hotel. With any luck a final decision will be
made soon but our prime intentions are to get the best value for
money and to keep costs down.
Between 15th and 22nd October, a blind and
disabled Israeli bowls team will be at the club practicing for the
disabled championships to be held in South Africa ?? when. They are
using our green because the championships will be on carpet whereas
in Israel they bowls only on Grass. As many of our members as
possible please to bowl against them. Rinks will be available for
club use.
A reminder. If you enter a club
competition, please make sure you check the dates of the competition
and are available for it throughout its term. It is very unfair to
enter and then drop out halfway. naturally, health and welfare
reasons don't come into this!!!!
Again, dates for your diary. The Bowls
Cyprus presentation evening will be at the Coral Bay Club in the
middle of September - watch this space for the date. Our Club dinner
dance will be either at the beginning of November (??6th) or end
November (??27th). The Bowls Cyprus National Finals will be at our
club on Thurs and Fri 5th and 6th May 2011.
Efro is looking into lighter weight summer
shirts - watch the notice board for details
